The Presbyterian Women have initiated a new ministry here at MPC – The “Prayer Shawl Ministry”.  This prayer shawl is made to reach out and embrace one with love and prayers during a time of need.  This need might be for an illness, or a comfort due to a loss of a loved one, or upcoming surgery, stress or it could be a time of celebration as a birth or a wedding.
The Prayer Shawls may be crocheted, knitted or sewn but always made with prayers and blessings for the recipient.
Two prayer shawls were delivered in February of 2008, both knitted by Sharon Seng.  They went to Pat Harrison who had Lou Gherig’s disease and to Rosa Lee Webster, housebound and the oldest living member at MPC.  Thelma Brown crocheted a shawl that was given to Elsie Guerry Martin, an elderly friend of Eunice Oglesby.
A prayer shawl was also sent to Hazel Buckner in June of 2008.  She had suffered a stroke.  While in October, Barbara Harper, Thelma Brown and Martha Ellis presented the prayer shawls they had made to various MPC family members including Christina Williams, Bonnie Page (Susan Coomer’s sister), and Julie Stone.
Two more prayer shawls were delivered in December of 2008.  The Shawl made by Barbara Harper was given to Frances Shuman, John’s mother, at Tara Nursing Home.  The other one, made by Thelma Brown was given to Melanie Baisden and she took it with her to Savannah Hospice.  We pray that it gave her some comfort to know that so much love was surrounding her.  Our prayers and sympathy are extended to the entire Baisden family in her passing.
We gave Frank Johnston a “Presbyterian Blue” throw embroidered with MPC loves U.  Frank passed away recently and is greatly missed.
We hope and pray that the love and blessings with which these coverings were made will bring some comfort, strength and courage to the recipients and their family and friends who love them dearly.
